Hot PIP(E)ING breakfast.
This is puttu predominantly a breakfast item savoured by the sinners from God’s own country, yours truly! It’s made of rice flour and grated coconut, steam-cooked in the pot-pipe vessel. Water is boiled in the pot and the filling is dumped into the pipe shaped part. When vapours begin to come out of the top of the pipe, you know it’s cooked.
As a side dish you have an option to choose between banana, black chana (gram) curry or a paapad. I prefer banana. And it’s a must to eat it hot otherwise it gets too dry and hard.

One of my favorite dish. My mom mix it with scarped coconut and sugar. It taste yum!
Yeah me too like it.
Sugar for me is the last option... when there's nothing else available... it tastes a bit dry though.. and as for the scraped coconut..that's one of the two prime ingredients :-D ...
Sorry :-) my knowledge on cooking sucks...
This time I go home gonna ask my mom to make it, its been a long time since I had it.
Yeah .. puttu is one of my fav. It's been quite sometime since I got to have one though!
For me, it's a bit slimy with banana. And I don't like gram with puttu as much. When it's hot, I like to sprinkle a bit of sugar on top with lots of scraped coconut .. The taste of raw coconut is absolutely delicious. Thanks for the memories!
@ Shuba
Open invitation at my place the next time it's made :-D
@ Rodders
Yeah it is slimy, but for once I really don't mind.
Look out for me at your door step ;-)
Thanks!
Never even heard of puttu though the cooking dish is interesting.
Hey I want to taste it! are you invitng me? if NO then can you tell me if any udippi restaurant serves it?
Everyone's invited...probably one of the 3rd saturdays when we are working, you guys can come over for breakfast :-D
Chubby!!! what have you done? This is outrageous. How can you do this to me? It has been like a thousand light years since i had the good fortune to savor this unique mallu delicacy. I can eat this with papad or black gram or kerala banana(boiled or ripe) or usual mumbai banana. I dont prefer sugar.
Some girls have all the luck... and I don't have to wait for light years... :-p
I want it !!
